Sorry for the low quality, that’s 2006 video for you.
The musical is a comedic take on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, minus the murder and suicide, with the Capulet’s, Montague’s and the Ruling house of Verona being replaced by stereotypical high-school cliques like Jocks, Thespians, and Brainiacs.
The film spawned another made for TV sequel, High School Musical 2, which saw over 17 million viewers for its premiere, and a feature film, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, plus a best selling original cast album.
But the sequels and cast album weren’t the only thing High School Musical’s success created. Disney transitioned the film from screen to stage quickly. It was announced in August 2006, just eight months after it premiered on television, that Stagedoor Manor theatre camp would be premiering the musical.
High School Musical on Stage! became a very popular musical for not just high schools to perform but both repertory and summer stock theatre’s as well. This is due to the strength of its musical numbers, enjoyable characters and fun story.
